Obamacare is a term you have undoubtedly hear over and over throughout the years. One of the questions most often asked or with preconceived misunderstanding is what exactly Obamacare / ACA is. Obamacare is an unofficial name for the Affordable Care Act, which was signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010.
The Affordable Care Act was implemented to provide Americans with affordable health insurance, and improve the quality of health insurance and health care in the United States.
How does Obamacare / Affordable Care Act work?
In 2013, more than 44 million Americans were were without health insurance because of expense. The majority of these Americans were working families who could not afford coverage. Obamacare / Affordable Care act is not without its flaws but it has its accomplishments.
- It requires that all Americans have health insurance either utilizing a private network or a federally assisted program.
- Extended the age young adults can stay on their parents’ plan till the age of 26.
- Offers assistance with costs and more affordable premiums through the marketplace.
- Ended the lifetime limits on health insurance coverage.
- No longer allows healthcare providers to drop you if you become ill.
- It made it illegal to be denied coverage because of a past illnesses.
- It makes it illegal to be charged higher premiums because (if you) are a woman.
- It created reforms for Medicare, and provides Medicare recipients with new benefits and protections.
- Expanded Medicaid eligibility so lower income families could pay the cost of health insurance.
